Jets/ Raiders Preview

4:05 PM ET, October 25, 2009

Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, Oakland , CA

The Jets were once the toast of the NFL after starting the season off 3-0 under new coach Rex Ryan (right) and their first round pick, quarterback Mark Sanchez. Well the last three weeks have been, well the equivalent of not being the toast of the NFL. Their balancing on a rope along with the Rams/Titans. Their offense has fallen off a cliff and they will try to cope after losing one of their best defensive players (and one of the top Defensive Tackles in the NFL) for the remainder of the season. They'll travel again to the daunted west coast to visit the Oakland Raiders just like last year. They hope that the black hole will help them avoid their 4th straight loss Sunday. The Raiders on the other hand are coming off a shocking upset of the Philadelphia Eagles, they will try to win their 2nd straight and improve to 3-4. A smash mouth D and smart play from Sanchez helped New York (AFC) (3-3) to wins in their first three games under the new skipper. But a humbling loss to New Orleans, then again the next week on Monday night at Miami. Well, Last Sunday's 16-13 overtime home loss to the Bills was...disgraceful and disastrous. Sanchez went 10-29 with 5 INTs.
Ryan gave his quarterback a vote of confidence even though he has one touchdown pass and eight interceptions during the losing streak. Sanchez's passer rating of 56.7 ranks 34th out of 36 quarterbacks, with Oakland's JaMarcus Russell 35th at 51.0.
The staff here at "From the mind of a 631" and Rex Ryan agree that Sanchez will bounce back from this. The game will be more difficult without Kris Jenkins, who tore his left ACL against Buffalo and was placed on injured reserve. The 6-foot-4, 360-pound Jenkins was the centerpiece of the line for the Jets' sixth-ranked defense. "It's going to be hard to replace Kris," Ryan said. "There's not many Kris Jenkins playing in this league. Other big losses for Gang Green are WRs Jerricho Cotchery and Brad Smith (right). Also joining them will be CB Lito Sheppard. Sheppard may not be as big of a loss as the other two considering he got beaten pretty bad last week. Making Otis "Toast" Smith look legendary.
The Jets still hope they can slow down the Raiders, who have scored a league-low five touchdowns.
Oakland had lost three straight by at least 20 points before tightening up its defense in a surprising 13-9 win over Philadelphia on Sunday. The Raiders also played most of the game without superstar all pro corner back Nnamdi Asomugha, (Below) who should be back at full strength this week after getting poked in the eye. The Jets need to get the ball to their playmakers but they must not rush it and/or force it like it seems that they have been recently.
This will also mark a big test for the NY Jets Offensive line as they will face former foe and star Defensive end Richard Seymour. Seymour has been in the news lately this week for his comments about how the Raiders are prime for a playoff push. They will need to neutralize him and tight end Zach Miller. Last week Miller played like a man on fire and had a career day. Russell was greeted by boos before last week's contest. One of Russell's seven career wins as an NFL starter came against the Jets last Oct. 19, as he helped Oakland to a 16-13 overtime victory at home. Since 1963, the Jets are 2-12-1 in 15 road games against the Raiders, with two of those contests being played in Los Angeles. Last year, New York lost all four of its visits to the West Coast, getting outscored 101-59.

QB M.Sanchez has been that bad that J.Russell has the Advantage.

Staff Picks

 Andrew Tilden 27-14 JETS
The Raiders couldn't come at a better time for Mark Sanchez and the Jets who needs to shake off the rust and get back to what got the jets off to a 3-0 start. The real test comes for the defense who needs to find a way to make up for the loss of DT Kris Jenkins.
Robert Luckett 24-13 JETS
A hampered Jets D will still prove too tough for the Raiders. Jets control the pace of the game on the ground  which hopefully opens up the passing game a bit for QB Mark Sanchez.
Matt Cole 17-10 Raiders
The Crip Keeper (Al Davis) will prove JaMarcus Russell was the right pick, even though it wasnt.
Ed Tierney 26-12 JETS
How do you replace a Pro Bowl DT... You don't. You splice and piece it together and hope some combination works. The D plays tough and get to Russell early. The coaches limited the plays for Sanchez to keep the mistakes down and the run game dominates in the Field goal showcase.

The Staff is 0-8 in picking JETS games the last 2 weeks. All four selected NY both games
