          The black stretch limo pulled into the driveway in Dix Hills late yesterday afternoon, the motor running. The Harris family was in a hurry to get started on a traffic-filled drive into Manhattan. One journey began and another was about to end. Tobias Harris, the 6-8, 220-pound senior forward from Half Hollow Hills West, after a busy fall that included visits to seven major universities, announced his college choice last night at the ESPN Zone in Times Square. At about 6:20 p.m., Harris, Newsday’s reigning Player of the Year and a two-time All-Long Island selection, looked directly into the TV cameras and, in his typically soft voice, said to a live audience on ESPNU, “I’ll play my college basketball at the University of Tennessee.” For Harris, it was a grand entrance into big-time college basketball. He’ll be playing for a coach, Bruce Pearl, who has a reputation for being passionate and emotional, and, most importantly for Harris, playing a fast-paced, up-and-down style that was a prerequisite for any team recruiting the 17-year-old. “I established a great relationship with Coach Pearl,” Harris said. “I could talk to him about anything. He promised me he’d put me in spots that suit my game. He knows I like to get up the court and finish or shoot the three. He’s seen me play a lot and he knows my game.”
      So did the coaches of the other six schools that were finalists in the Harris Sweepstakes: Syracuse, Louisville, West Virginia, Maryland, Georgia Tech and Kentucky. “The other schools were all 9s. But I thought Tennessee was a 10,” said Harris, who visited all seven schools, but made an extra trip to Tennessee on Tuesday as he neared his decision.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Bill Belichick risked everything on one play Sunday night. It cost him a victory, and it may wind up costing him a trip back to Indianapolis for a rematch with Peyton Manning later this season.

Comeback Clashes. Sunday night's comeback by the Colts wasn't that rare in their meetings with the Patriots. The last four games between the two have involved rallies.

After the New England coach failed on a stunning gamble deep in his own territory, Manning threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Reggie Wayne with 13 seconds left that rallied the unbeaten Colts to a 35-34 win over the Patriots."It's a bummer," Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said. Needing a first down to seal the game, Belichick decided to go for it on fourth-and-2 from his own 28 with 2:08 to go. The Patriots called their second timeout of the drive, leaving them with none, to set up the play: A short pass from Brady to Kevin Faulk, something the 2007 NFL MVP had repeatedly used to burn Indy's young, depleted pass defense all night. Not this time. Faulk made a juggling catch but safety Melvin Bullitt, who replaced Bob Sanders in the lineup, came straight up the field and drove the Patriots running back into the ground a half-yard short of the marker."We tried to win the game on that play," Belichick explained. "I thought we could make the yard. We had a good play, we completed it. I don't know how we couldn't get a yard." It was the most improbable victory for the Colts (9-0) in their 18-game regular-season winning streak, which is now tied for the second-longest in league history with, of all teams, New England. The Colts trailed by 17 points early in the fourth quarter. This marked the first time Belichick's Patriots had lost when leading by at least 13 in the final period.

"When you see them going for it on fourth down, you get a little nervous, but our defense blitzed them, pressured them and got the stop," Manning said. "It certainly changed our philosophy. In practice, we're going 60 or 70 yards. So we figure we're going to have to go five, six, seven plays. In the huddle, I said, 'Obviously, we need a touchdown, but let's not be in a hurry.'" The Patriots didn't dare second-guess their coach, though everybody else did.

Poor David Duval

       There's a familiar face missing from the leaderboard on the final day of the last PGA Tour event of the season.The problem for Duval is that he's been missing from an awful lot of PGA weekends. Since the top 125 on the money list receive full status, and Duval entered the weekend at No. 125, his missing the cut on Friday means he'll be just like you or me or any other schlub next year; he's already signed up for qualifying school, hes loosing his PGA tour card. But, Because he's still a name, he'll receive some sponsor's exemptions. And because he won the 2001 British Open, his last PGA Tour win, he'll be able to play in at least three majors. But it's still a remarkable fall from grace for the man once considered Tiger's only competition.

         Last night the Islanders lost in Overtime to the Panthers, but gain a point which puts their total to 21 which so far is good for 7th in the Eastern Conference. Their record is 7-6-7
          NHL analyst Pierre McGuire suggests that Rick DiPietro will return (in a day or 30) and if the Islanders acquire “the right top-six forward” for Martin Biron, “they can make the playoffs.” I’m not here to debate the playoffs part; we’ll know in a few weeks how realistic that may be. But a present-day, top-six forward?
       I have to disagree with him here. If Garth Snow can prod a 20-goal, 50-point second-line forward - I assume it would be a wing - for Biron, Michael Farber may have to name him SI’s GM of the Year for the second time in four years. Biron was passed over by many teams in the summer and signed a one-year deal with the Islanders three weeks after the UFA market opened. The view here is that many teams will be interested, but none will offer or have the luxury of offering a significant roster player for Biron. A solid prospect or draft pick, maybe. Maybe even both. But take someone out of their lineup who could crack the Islanders’ top six and immediately contribute to a playoff run? Seems like a stretch.
         Here’s hoping Pierre is right. Would love to see Marty get big minutes with a contender, and the Islanders add a legitimate top-six veteran wing. I just can’t put money down on that one.
